Creativity and the Sacral Chakra

Perhaps you are familiar with the Sanskrit term Chakra, having heard it in your neighborhood yoga class or in the online yoga community.  The term refers to the seven energy centers in the body, though technically they are considered energy “wheels”, if we are to follow the true definition in Sanskrit.  These energy centers are located along the spine, starting at the base of the spine and ending at the crown, and are responsible for transferring our prana, or life energy, along the spine and throughout the body.

And why am I writing about the chakras on the full blue blood moon of January 2018?  Because I cannot deny the signs that I have been seeing lately, telling me to work with the second chakra, also known as the sacral chakra or Svadhisthana. The sacral chakra is located just below the navel, and has to with the reproductive system, sexuality, sensuality, and creativity.  It is the energy that allows us to connect with others, and the energy that pours forth to aid us when we are in the mood to create.  I have been feeling the need to create lately in a very intense way.  The fact that the energy and pull from this special full moon are facilitating my need to create is merely a sweet cherry on top of that figurative sundae. 🙂

The Sacral Chakra, Svadhisthana

I went to a Yoga Nidra class this weekend where, unbeknownst to me, the topic was opening the sacral chakra and allowing the energy center to relax and take on a state of flow and harmony.  It was a delightful class of hip openers and talk of chakras, something that I highly enjoyed as I laid there drifting off into thoughts of creation.  🙂 Perhaps it is no coincidence that I started this blog right around the same time as this intense full moon and all of the energy I feel swirling around it!

How does this relate to inviting joy into our lives? Paying attention to your chakras can help you to balance or recenter yourself in a meaningful way.  Evaluating and following through on projects and relationships that we feel the most energy or flow around is one way to indulge in that joy of creation.  Whether you enjoy drawing, painting, photography, dance, music, writing, or many other activities, the need to create is a fundamental human urge, coming just after our need for shelter, food, and safety.  Don’t forget to create on this special occasion of a rare full moon with so many properties to help you flow into your highest forms of creation.  Let me know in the comments if you are feeling this creative energy as well, and what you have been creating lately. 🙂 I am so curious!
